Today I learned that solid bricks of tea used to be favored over metallic coins in Siberia as well as Mongolia and Tibet! It could be used as money and used to drink, so it was much nicer than silly coins, which weren't edible. The tea bricks were known as eighths because their worth was equal to eight Tibetan Tangka coins.
